Sany Heavy Industry, the world's third-largest and China's largest construction machinery enterprise, has been leveraging Hong Kong's strengths on its internationalization journey for over 20 years since entering the Hong Kong market in 1998. Recently, it has also listed in Hong Kong. "Cloud Dialogue" interviewed Xiang Wenbo, Rotating Chairman of Sany Group.
Wu Xinchun: Talking about Sany's connection with Hong Kong, beyond the capital market, Sany has participated in projects like the tallest buildings here, ICC and IFC, as well as major infrastructure and public projects such as Hong Kong International Airport and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. What impressions have these projects left on you?
Xiang Wenbo: China's engineering machinery industry is already globally competitive. Sany's production and sales volumes for many products rank first in the world. Currently, the vast majority of super high-rise buildings over 700 meters tall worldwide are topped out using Sany's concrete machinery. Sany's equipment was used for the pinnacle of the Burj Khalifa, currently the world's tallest building. We hope that in the future, no matter how tall the world's skyscrapers get, Sany will have the capability to pump concrete to those heights.
Wu Xinchun: You mentioned earlier that Sany's technological transformation will be considered successful when everyone recognizes it as a software company. Why such strong determination to embrace new technologies?
Xiang Wenbo: Digitalization encompasses product digitalization, manufacturing digitalization, and enterprise operation and management digitalization. The driving force behind this is artificial intelligence technology. This requires a large number of personnel engaged in software development and design, which is precisely what traditional enterprises lack. Furthermore, the future holds limitless possibilities. Imagine if all construction machinery became unmanned—what an enormous market that would be.
Leveraging 'Intelligent Manufacturing' to Support Developing Countries' Industrial Systems
Wu Xinchun: The Lighthouse Factory in Indonesia is the first overseas lighthouse factory for China's engineering machinery industry. What value does establishing such a factory in Indonesia have for demonstrating the strength of Chinese intelligent manufacturing?
Xiang Wenbo: Indonesia is one of our recently established factories, and of course, we have applied the most advanced manufacturing technology there. As a global enterprise, we have a responsibility to promote the progress of human society. One of our goals is to use our technology to help developing countries establish their own industrial systems. This is because intelligent manufacturing can significantly reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enhance quality.
Particularly regarding workforce, many countries lack an industrial foundation and skilled technicians, and they cannot cultivate them in the short term. Therefore, intelligent manufacturing is an effective way to address talent shortages.
